Kitich Camp SamburuKitich camp is located in the remote Mathews mountain range, north of Samburu, facing the Ngeng River and surrounded by green wooded hills and craggy peaks. The Samburu and Soyei people of this area used to gather in the valley of the Ngeng for feasting, singing and dancing. Here they were always assured of water and grazing for their cattle and honey for beer making – they called the area “Kitich – the place of happiness”

Description: The unique tented camp is nestled in a verdant grove of fig trees, indigenous flowering shrubs and prehistoric cycad palms. Kitich evokes the true atmosphere of early century safaris, with its hurricane lamps and attentive service.

Kitich CampAccommodation & Facilities: The camp has four luxurious tents, each for two people, with large comfortable beds and en-suite bathroom with canvas safari-style hot water showers. The separate open-plan cottage houses a bar, dining and sitting room with a fireplace.

Hosted By: Giulio Bertolli, who left his olive oil farm in Tuscany to become a well-traveled nomad in Africa, has 30 years of experience in the most remote countries of the continent

Activities:

  • Kitich avoids the traditional game drives, and encourages walking in pristine and unexplored wilderness.
  • Elephant trekking – here more than 250 elephant roam the area.
  • Bird and butterfly watching
  • Bush picnics
  • Swimming in the natural rock pool in the forest
  • Visit to local Samburu village and on occasions the Samburu market.

Our party of 6 (2 from USA & 4 from Lithuania) returned from a week's safari on Saturday August 11, 2007 - our first time in Africa and first safari. Our first exposure was the game drive after our guide Robert Kutu and Jack Wanjala picked us up at the Amboseli airstrip. We were astounded at the numbers of animals and birds that we saw that first day. This was followed by a night drive that evening. The following day was a 2-hour walk with Mike, followed by an afternoon visit to the Maasai village, sundowner and another night drive. Our entire experience, including the accommodations at the camp, was truly memorable, including the campfire and beautiful starry sky (and the early morning drive to the airstrip wrapped in ponchos against the morn...
