Game Viewing

Wildebeests & zebras Crossing Mara RiverGovernor' s Camp is ideally situated to maximize the game viewing experience of its guests throughout the year. It is also located in one of the most spectacular parts of the Masai Mara.

The camp is at the heart of the wildebeest migration that passes through this area between July and September.

The Mara River sees some of the most dramatic scenes of wildebeest and zebra crossing the river and facing the waiting crocodiles.

This is the quintessential time for the ˜annual migration' . The Masai Mara is a large game reserve in south western Kenya which is the continuation of the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania.

The park boasts astonishing amount of game. Gazelle, wildebeest and zebra graze in large numbers and where prey is found so are predators.

Baby Elephants Playing - Maasai MaraThe famous black-maned Mara lions, cheetah and leopard hunt these grazing herds of ungulates. Great herds of elephant browse amongst the rich grasslands while hippo and crocodiles keep cool in the Mara and Talek Rivers.

Each year, in the deep south of the Serengeti the wildebeest start their great trek in search for the sweet grass of the Masai Mara. This is known as the Great Migration.

It is estimated that more than a half million wildebeest enter the Masai Mara and are joined by another 10 000 from the Loita Hills in the east of the Mara. There is nowhere else on earth to compare this wildlife marvel.

Our party of 6 (2 from USA & 4 from Lithuania) returned from a week's safari on Saturday August 11, 2007 - our first time in Africa and first safari. Our first exposure was the game drive after our guide Robert Kutu and Jack Wanjala picked us up at the Amboseli airstrip. We were astounded at the numbers of animals and birds that we saw that first day. This was followed by a night drive that evening. The following day was a 2-hour walk with Mike, followed by an afternoon visit to the Maasai village, sundowner and another night drive. Our entire experience, including the accommodations at the camp, was truly memorable, including the campfire and beautiful starry sky (and the early morning drive to the airstrip wrapped in ponchos against the morn...
