Sarara Tented CampAt the foot of Warges Mountain with sweeping views of the Mathews range, in Samburu country, lies Sarara Camp, in the 185,000 acre Namunyak Wildlife Conservation Trust.

Owned by the Trust, and jointly managed, Sarara is a venture dedicated to both wildlife conservation and community development.


Sarara Tented Camp  - Laikipia KenyaDescription: Sarara Camp is a luxury tented camp, built from local materials. It overlooks a waterhole which attracts a variety of game and flocks of birds. Namunyak, means ‘the place of peace’ in Samburu, and this atmosphere is certainly reflected at Sarara Camp.

Accommodation & Facilities: Sarara Camp has five spacious, carefully appointed double tents, with open-air showers and private verandas. The lounge and dining area has a huge thatched roof and a wooden deck overlooking the natural rock swimming pool.

Hosted: Sarara is managed and hosted by Piers and Hilary Bastard, of Acacia Trails. Members for the Samburu community help look after guests at Sarara, and not only are they perfect hosts, but excellent guides in the bush.

Activities:

  • Hiking into the Mathews rainforest which is full of birds and butterflies.
  • Climbing Ololokwe with donkeys
  • Fly camping with camels along wide sand ‘luggas’.

  • Visit to the ‘singing wells’, where Samburu water their cattle in the dry season.
  • Cultural visits.

Optional Extras: Bird shooting (seasonal).

Closed Season: April, May and November.

Access: Private charter to the Namunyak airstrip, by Airkenya to Samburu, followed by road transfer, or by 4 wheel drive vehicle.

The entire trip was astounding. We saw things we had never seen before, and had experiences that were utterly amazing. All three lodges we stayed at in South Africa were very good, albeit with different amenities and experiences. The accommodations at Arathusa and N'Kaya were the best, but Gomo Gomo was a nice camp with friendly people, and we saw amazing things there as well. To show you our fortune, in my previous 4 trips to Africa, I had only seen one leopard about a quarter mile away up in a tree. On this trip, we saw 8 different leopards, almost ran over 2 of them, and saw a mating pair of leopards mate (this was at Gomo Gomo). I have seen that since we have been home, they have had leopard cubs at Arathusa along with wild dog pups. We ...
